Where do all the guns go?
International conflict + resolution in rural
Scotland in 2006 Birds of Paradise Theatre Company
present the world premiere of Mouth of Silence by Gerry Loose.
Opening at the Tramway Glasgow on Thursday 22nd June during
Refugee Week and touring across Scotland until 22nd July 2006, Mouth
of Silence looks at issues around displaced communities and how they –
and nations – rebuild after conflict. Resonant issues of
depopulation and re-population are the foundations of this daring new
show from Glasgow based Birds of Paradise. Ten years on from a Peace
Treaty, against the backdrop of 36 years of civil war in Guatemala,
Mouth of Silence is a production for these times, and perhaps every
time.
It calls up situations past and present while asking the people of
Scotland: how do we deal with conflict? How do we deal with those
looking for refuge and setting up home in Scotland?
Heart-stopping and humane, Mouth of Silence depicts the struggle
for justice as affecting us all. Using promenade theatre, the
audience will join the performers, moving from space to space; the
celebratory return of the exiled community to their homeland. The performance will
be interactive and fully inclusive with a set echoing the blue plastic
buildings of a UN refugee encampment. This production will have
resonance in many rural areas where the issues of depopulation and
repopulation are pertinent and is touring to many areas including
Isles of Gigha, Harris and North & South Uist. The performance will
be inclusively signed using the relationship between sign language and
English as a parallel to the power relations between indigenous
languages and Spanish in Guatemala. Mouth of Silence is directed by
Morven Gregor who lived with a community of returned refuges in
Central America as an international observer. Those experiences
inspired this piece with award winning playwright and poet, Gerry
Loose – Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland winner 2006/7.
“Peace is not a magic word. It needs to be worked
at.” Birds of Paradise is a professional touring theatre company,
which produces adventurous and challenging work that places disability
in the public arena. The company has toured throughout Scotland for 13
years with extensive programmes of performances and workshops.
Morven Gregor, Gerry Loose and the cast are available for interviews.
The production will be accompanied by an exhibition and outreach
activities. For further information see
